Christmas and New Year’s Day is almost here and we have one more new quiz for today. This is the fourth quiz in the 12 Days of Quizzes series.

On the Fourth Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…four colly birds…

I don’t know about you, but I had to look up what a colly bird actually is. It turns out that colly birds are another name for blackbirds.

We all have probably watched with wonder as birds have frolicked in a puddle and transformed it into an impromptu bird bath.

But, if that puddle was caused by overspray from sprinklers irrigating a lawn, the irrigation system just violated one of the provisions of the California Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance.

Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance

California passed and implemented a model water conservation ordinance to establish a minimum standard for landscape water conservation. The model ordinance must be adopted by local permitting authorities. Therefore, any new landscape or renovation that meets the requirements established in the ordinance must satisfy the Model Ordinance requirements.

Landscape architect candidates who have recently passed the California Supplemental Exam for landscape architects report that there are several questions about water conservation, irrigation, and the model ordinance.

The following quiz questions will test your knowledge of California’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance. Let’s dig in!

Quiz 4: Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance

1. The Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance shall apply to all of the following landscape projects except:

 new construction and rehabilitated landscapes for public agency projects
 plant collections, as part of botanical gardens and arboretums open to the public
 private development projects with a landscape area equal to or greater than 2,500 square feet requiring a permit
 new construction and rehabilitated landscapes which are developer-installed in single-family and multi-family projects with a landscape area equal to or greater than 2,500 square
 new construction landscapes single-family and multi-family residential projects with a total project landscape area equal to or greater than 5,000 square feet requiring a building or landscape permit

2. All of the following projects are exempt from the Model Efficient Landscape Ordinance except:

 cemeteries
 registered local, state or federal historical sites
 ecological restoration projects that do not require a permanent irrigation system
 mined-land reclamation projects that do not require a permanent irrigation system
 homeowner installed landscape in excess of 5,000 sq. feet that requires a building or landscape permit

3. “Estimated Total Water Use” (ETWU) means

 the portion of total precipitation which becomes available for plant growth
 the total estimated amount of water used for the landscape
 any non-spray low volume irrigation system utilizing emission devices with a flow rate measured in gallons per hour
 an automatic timing device used to remotely control valves that operate an irrigation system

4. What is the definition of “evapotranspiration rate”?

 to draw moisture from, as by heating, leaving only the dry solid portion
 to convert or change into a vapor
 “evapotranspiration rate” means the quantity of water evaporated from adjacent soil and other surfaces and transpired by plants during a specified time
 to pass off in or as vapor

5. What is a hydrozone?

 a zone where aquatic recreation is the primary activity
 “hydrozone” means a portion of the landscaped area having plants with similar water needs. A hydrozone may be irrigated or non-irrigated
 the rate of water entry into the soil expressed as a depth of water per unit of time (e.g., inches per hour)
 an in-depth evaluation of the performance of an irrigation system conducted by a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor
