Day 1 – Treated Lumber Quiz

The holiday season is upon us.

While many of your friends are out at Christmas parties, you are focused on your career and passing the California Supplemental Exam (CSE) for landscape architects.

Christmas Gift for Landscape Architect Candidates

My Christmas gift to all of you working hard to pass the CSE is a quiz a day for the next 12 days.

On the First Day of Christmas…

On the First Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree…

Well, partridges are not native to California. If they were, you would probably need a CEQA review to ensure your project did not affect their habitat. Instead of the partridge, lets focus on the tree.

Quiz 1: Treated Lumber

Trees are precious and handy for shade, reducing the urban heat island affect, increasing property values, and provide homes for wildlife.

Trees also churn out useful building materials that benefit landscape architects and our clients.

Regrettably, most lumber is not naturally rot resistant.

Pressure-treated lumber is the answer for long-lasting wood that can survive prolonged exposure to weather and the elements.

Day 1 Quiz – Treated Lumber Questions

The following questions will test your knowledge of treated lumber.

1. Why should treated lumber be used outdoors?

2. Which types of wood preservatives are currently used for treated lumber?

3. Which industry organization is responsible for labeling treated lumber in the United States?

4. Why was chromated copper arsenate (CCA) banned as a method for treating lumber for residential and commercial use in the early 2000’s by the EPA?

5. What types of metal fasteners and hardware are recommended for use with treated lumber? Select all that apply.
